Sorry about all your grief with the rear wheel. These are common problems and have been addressed here before. First, the left side of the wheel, where the brake is, has the left-hand bolt and must be turned clockwise to loosen.
Second, I don't recommend giving up on the pneumatic tyres until you consider some of the posts, especially this one about tools that make changing the tube much easier:
viewtopic.php?f=2&t=1417 Also, it may seem odd, but i always carry front and rear spare WHEELS, ready to go so i don't have to change the tubes on the road. The wheels are after all only 6" or 8" and don't weigh much. Then you can change the tube at your leisure at home.
The third issue is the chain getting caught against the tyre. There is a ridge inside the very bottom of the crankcase housing on the chain side which needs to be filed away to allow sufficient room for the chain to fall between the housing and the wheel. This may have been corrected on the newest A-bikes.
