New a bike owner in London - rear wheel problem!

Postby mcconnachiea on Mon Nov 29, 2010 10:49 pm

Hi guys, Just got my A- bike from the depot today, only thing is I got a puncture on the way back from mitcham, and the rear wheel bolt is so ridiculously tight I broke a spanner trying to undo it! I know it goes the 'wrong' way.

Also been looking at getting solid inner tubes, or just filling it with tyreweld

Nice to see you bought the A-bike. What model did you buy? As to the flat tire, I hope you fixed it OK. Nice to see you joining the A-bike forum. I hope you post about about your bike and how it works for you.

Cheers stevbike :)

Its a standard model with the 6 in wheels. Unfortunately I made mincemeat of the inner tube with the cheap steel tyre levers so I have about 3 patches on there.

I was thinking of solidifying the inner tube with tyreweld until I can get some polyurethane wheels. I can see punctures becoming quite a problem. I'll let everyone know how this goes :)

There have a topic about the tire problem. I do not have the links to the places on this site but you can look them up yourself. Basiclly, some users of the copy version like myself have the solid tires and I have had no real problems with it. Others have used have with the air filled tires with relativily no problems. The bike is fun to use as you are finding out.

Nice you found out about this site. It should help you out with any problems you have with the bike.

Cheers

Thanks for the help guys :)

But I have yet another problem!

The rear wheel seems to be wonky. Don't know if its the rim after all that tyre pulling or if the shaft is misalighned, but the tyre hits the chain when its turned which would cause a huge amount of resistance when cycling. Any solutions?

Here are videos showing how to remove the wheels and replace the inner tube of an A-bike.

Sorry about all your grief with the rear wheel. These are common problems and have been addressed here before. First, the left side of the wheel, where the brake is, has the left-hand bolt and must be turned clockwise to loosen.
Second, I don't recommend giving up on the pneumatic tyres until you consider some of the posts, especially this one about tools that make changing the tube much easier:
viewtopic.php?f=2&t=1417
Also, it may seem odd, but i always carry front and rear spare WHEELS, ready to go so i don't have to change the tubes on the road. The wheels are after all only 6" or 8" and don't weigh much. Then you can change the tube at your leisure at home.
The third issue is the chain getting caught against the tyre. There is a ridge inside the very bottom of the crankcase housing on the chain side which needs to be filed away to allow sufficient room for the chain to fall between the housing and the wheel. This may have been corrected on the newest A-bikes.

The problem seems to occur only on the early model of A-bike Plus (DZB-02). The first-generation (DZB-01) and the latest models (DZB-03 and so on) of A-bike seem not to have this problem if the bike is under appropriate chain tension.
