Hmmm. Well I wouldnt be so quick to say it cant be done but it would take some engineering.
I was thinking about changing the back wheel from 6 to 8 inches a while ago and found some good parts. You can buy good 8 inch wheels for wheelchairs etc. The rear axle with the small built in gear is the same as axles for mini motorbikes (Which also use the same chain).
The difficulty is in firmly fixing the wheel and bearings to the gearbox, which needs to be longer. I was considering 4mm aluminiuum plate firmly bolted to either side of the existing gearbox.
