How do I adjust the chain tension?

Postby wardmw on Wed Jan 11, 2012 10:47 pm

Hi all,

I have an A-bike+ (or is it an A-Bike, it's an older model anyway) and this evening I replaced a punctured inner tube which seemed to go well enough but now the rear wheel will not freewheel and the chain is extremely tight.

I've looked at the manual but it is very unclear as to how I should adjust the chain tensioners. I can see the arrow and the H, M and L marks but cannot see how I can unscrew the Bearing Holder like the manual says. I tried loosening off the rear wheel bolts but to no avail. what am I missing?

Hi Martin,

On older models of the A-bike, you have to open the crank case in order to adjust the chain tension. However, I don't think adjusting the chain tension can solve the problem in you case. There must be something wrong inside the crank case, so you have to open it first and see what's wrong inside it anyway.

Hi Amuro,

Turns out you were spot on, when I took the crank case cover off I could see that the plastic chain guard had caught on top of the chain and that was what was causing the drag. I found it very fiddly to get the guard back in to its correct place but finally succeeded and it's freewheeling nicely now.

Thanks!
