New A-Bike Electric [Update: Now on Kickstarter!]

Postby Garry on Sun Jul 05, 2015 6:33 pm

Hello everyone

I've just been informed that the official A-Bike Electric is launching (again I know!), but this time it's really happening, subject to a successful Kickstarter campaign. So let's all help to promote this and support it if we can. Here's the official announcement, and I will post the Kickstarter link when I receive it:

"The long awaited A-Bike Electric will be available for pre-order soon. It's the same award winning design but is now powered with a 24V battery that keeps you going up to 25km. Weighing just 12 kg it'll be the world's lightest, most compact and most affordable electric bike. To be the first to know when it's on Kickstarter sign up to the mailing list at http://www.a-bike.co.uk. You can see the latest videos and images by following on https://www.facebook.com/ABikeElectric and https://twitter.com/ABikeElectric. If you're in London email richard@a-bike.co.uk if you'd like to be amongst the first to try out the new A-Bike Electric."

That's all for now, and let's use this new thread for any discussion of the official A-Bike Electric.

I was lucky enough to be given a short test ride on a prototype A-Bike Electric yesterday. It's very impressive. Although a little heavier than existing A-Bikes, it still has the same fantastic compact fold. The motor really makes riding so easy - I rode up a short but reasonably steep slope with virtually no effort at all.

The build quality is also extremely good, with much more solid-feeling metal parts than the older models. The tyres are now solid rather than pneumatic which makes a great deal of sense - no maintenance required, and the motor means that any increased rolling resistance is unnoticeable. The saddle is also much improved over the A-Bike City version - a fair bit cushier, and uses a standard seat-post and clamp.

That sounds great, thanks for the early report!

The Kickstarter page is now live at https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/844480590/a-bike-electric-the-lightest-and-most-compact-elec/. It's off to a good start and looks like it will meet its goal quite soon. The price starts at £449 with delivery from September.

I just wonder, why the electric cable under the crosspiece cannot be hidden, just like the rear brake cable?
